Middle Name Changes Made Easy
Changing your middle name is one of the most common reasons people apply for a Deed Poll in the UK. From adding a middle name for personal or cultural reasons to removing one that no longer suits you, we’re here to help make it official.
There are no restrictions on middle names. Simply apply for your Deed Poll online with us, and once received, you can begin updating all your official records, including your passport, driving licence, bank accounts, and more.
Adding a Middle Name
A Deed Poll allows you to add any middle name you like, provided it meets basic standards (i.e., it’s not offensive or misleading).
Note: HM Passport Office has a 30-character limit for the combined first and middle names on your passport. If your name exceeds this limit, you can request the full version to be printed on the passport’s observation page, with an abbreviated version on the main page.
Removing a Middle Name
Dropping your middle name is just as straightforward. Many people choose to simplify their name or remove a middle name they no longer identify with. To do so, apply for a Deed Poll without your current middle name.
Once your Deed Poll is issued, you can begin updating your documents to reflect your new name, omitting the removed middle name.
Important Considerations
While there’s no requirement to update every single document immediately, it’s important to know:
- Your new name will only gain full public recognition once you begin using it across official documents
- If you’re planning to move abroad, consistency across all identity documents is essential
Holding a Deed Poll alone doesn’t mean your new name is recognised; you must use it actively in everyday life and across your official records.
