Changing Your Name Abroad as a British Citizen
Over 5.5 million British nationals now live permanently outside the UK. If you’re one of them and want to officially change your name while living overseas, you’re still eligible to do so.
At Change My Name, we make it easy for British citizens abroad to change their name using a Deed Poll.
Below, we answer the most common questions from expats about how to complete the process.

Frequently Asked Questions from British Expats
Yes, absolutely!
As a British citizen, you have the right to change your name no matter where you currently live. You can use our Deed Poll service to update your name and begin the process of notifying relevant authorities and institutions.
There’s no limit.
You can change any part of your name (first name, middle names, surname) as often as you like, provided the change is not made for fraudulent purposes or with malicious intent.
No, you’ll need to apply for a new passport.
Your passport will not change automatically once you create a Deed Poll. You must submit a new passport application to HM Passport Office, including:
- Your current passport
- Your signed and witnessed Deed Poll
- A completed passport renewal form
It’s essential that your passport reflects your new name, especially to avoid issues with international travel or visa applications. For help, check out our Passport Name Change Guide.
Not at this time.
We can only ship Deed Poll documents to UK addresses. If you’re living abroad, we recommend using the UK address of a trusted friend or relative.
We’re working on expanding our service to offer international delivery in the near future.
If you’re living outside the UK, your Deed Poll should be witnessed by a solicitor, notary public, or someone recognised in your country of residence.
Unlike the UK, where witnesses can be any independent adult over 18, expats must take extra care to ensure that their witness is accepted by the relevant UK institutions, particularly if you’re using your Deed Poll for government purposes like passport renewal or visa applications.
- Officially recognised in the UK and abroad
- Suitable for British expats
- Easy online application
- Same-day processing when ordered before 3PM
- Friendly support, wherever you are in the world
